- Compression. The weight of everything stacked above crushes the pieces below. This is the dominant failure in floor-loaded containers and in tall stacks of unpalletised cartons. The defence is structural: stronger carton board, internal dividers that carry load, and a stacking limit.
- Shock. A sudden impact from a dropped carton, a forklift bump or a hard set-down. Cushioning absorbs shock; carton strength does not. The defence is material: foam, corrugated wrap, air cushions.
